Places to Visit in Central Texas

Enchanted Rock State Natural Area, Pedernales Falls State Park, and Natural Bridge Caverns are all great places to visit in the Central Texas Area.

Enchanted Rock was quite steep at some points, but it was fun climbing to the top and watching the beautiful sunset that evening. I would suggest visiting in the fall or winter so the hike isn’t compounded by heat.

There is a bird watching area in Pedernales that has a room with benches where you can sit and watch birds (and squirrels and other animals) come and go. There’s also a log of the birds people have seen there (see below). Don’t forget to bring your bird guide so you can contribute to the list, too 🙂

Geeting down to the falls may be tough for some and navigating to certain areas can be tricky so be prepared to hop from rock to rock.

You may want to bring binoculars if you enjoy watching wildlife. When I was there, a mother goat was on a ledge and her kids were squealing and trying to keep up with her. It’s very neat how they can balance and move around on rocky, steep hillsides.

Natural Bridge Caverns is also a fun place to visit if you’re in the San Antonio or New Braunfels area. I have been many times and always enjoy looking at the formations underground. If you are afraid of heights, be aware that some parts of the path are dimly lit and slippery. The end of the cave is also pretty high up and you overlook all the formations below you. If you don’t like tight spaces, there are also a couple points where you have to squeeze through a narrow path.

Walking through the caverns makes you feel like a cool explorer who works for Nat Geo.
